The leftmost column of stitches in ribs and cables were always bigger, looser than the others. I fixed that by taking up _combination knitting_. My knit stitches are formed in the usual way. My purl stitches are formed the “lazy way” by wrapping the yarn around the needle the opposite way from normal. This means that the transition from knit-column to purl-column uses less yarn, which makes for a smaller knit-column.
Of course, this means that on the next row, the knit stitches (now purls) present in the usual way, with Western stitch mount, and the purl stitches (now knits) have the left leg forward, in Eastern stitch mount.
I could understand why combination knitting is a “stitch too far” for some knitters, but I like the results well enough so that I have been willing to learn to deal with mixed stitch mounts.
